On June 16th the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (“SIG”), the governing body behind Bluetooth, announced that the next version of Bluetooth will be referred to as Bluetooth 5, and that going forward the “.x” reference will be dropped.  So no more 5.0, 5.1, etc.  This is to simplify the marketing message according to the press release.

Bluetooth SIG confirms that it will quadruple the range and double the speed of the current version of Bluetooth while increasing packet size by 8 times.  This means Bluetooth will start to to compete directly with Wi-Fi in terms of range.  Amongst the details that were announced were improvements to the standard for functionality for connectionless services like location-relevant information and navigation.  It looks like the payload in advertising transmissions will be added to “significantly”.

The Bluetooth SIG press release can be found here.

Blue Maestro can’t wait to see what the further details will be and how we can build the new functionality into our products.  The 16th June event will be held in London and we will keep you posted.
